Georgina first met Service For Peace as an AmeriCorps VISTA serving the SFP Miami chapter in 2007-2008. After finishing her VISTA service, she decided to see what all the fuss was about and join a program. She participated in the Global PeaceMakers program in 2008, serving in the Dominican Republic right on the Haitian border.
She returned with her best friend to volunteer again with us in the Global PeaceMakers program in 2009 in Cote d'Ivoire. This is what she has to say:
The two week experience rehabilitating a desolate school, volunteering alongside locals taught me just how similar people can be even when separated by differing countries, cultures, and economies. I acquired skills in sharing, teamwork, and leadership beyond anything I could have learned at home or school. I was even inspired to lead another GPM to Cote d'Ivoire Africa the following year.
Both programs helped form international friendships that are still bonded by the memories of our service. These friendships introduced me to a form of love I had previously not known. Finally, participating in these projects helped confirm my calling to pursue a Master of Social Work at Columbia University and now a career in social justice and community organizing. The GPM experience will always be a part of me."
