Service For Peace Celebrates Break Away’s 20th Anniversary in Washington, D.C.

Service For Peace congratulates Break Away on their 20^th anniversary in the business of changing communities and creating active citizens at universities around the US! On August 5^th, 2011, Service For Peace had the honor of attending Break Away’s 20^th Anniversary Gala held at American University in Washington, D.C.

 The evening was a fantastic and emotional celebration of the accomplishments of the Alternative Break movement over the past 20 years—transforming students into active citizens who, impacted by just one or several Alternative Break experiences, commit their careers and lives to effecting positive change in their communities and beyond. Alternative Breaks engage US university students in meaningful and genuine community service experiences during their academic vacations. The programs encourage students to engage with pressing social issues and local cultures both within the US and abroad.

 Service For Peace is proud to be an Active Citizenship Sponsor of the Break Away Gala, supporting Break Away with needed funding, social media, and other kinds of support.

 Four representatives from Service For Peace attended the evening event, including our very own Harold Silva, Regional Executive Director for Service For Peace Latin America & the Caribbean—who serves as a member of the Break Away Board of Directors.

 It was both fascinating and an honor to attend the event with such inspiring and exemplary active citizens from all different backgrounds, including student leaders, university administrators and mentors, community partner supporters, and more.
