Thank You for Your Support in the DreamCatcher Library "Click for Peace" CampaignJanuary 25, 2010Dear SFP Friends:
On Friday, January 22, we completed what I believe is a highly significant
accomplishment in the history of Service For Peace. No matter what the final
outcome may be, the Chase Community Giving Challenge produced an
unprecedented, coordinated, global effort from our chapters.
There are several positive aspects of the challenge that I want to highlight
but first, I want to thank all of you for your sincere investment in both
rounds of this contest. I hope your disappointment at not winning the $1
million will not cause anyone to forget that we won $25,000! This was a
major step forward for our organization, increasing our visibility and our
credibility in the non-profit world. Thousands of people are now aware of
our mission and our accomplishments and many will continue to support and
assist our work. Thank you and congratulations to you all on a job well
done!!
One point about which I am particularly pleased is that this challenge
brought about new levels of unity and cooperation as we rallied around one
clear focus - and what an exciting focus it was! The possibility of winning
$1 million caused us to think BIG. One hundred DreamCatcher Libraries was -
AND IS - an exciting, viable goal for all of us. So one thing I would like
to propose is that this is STILL our goal. The timeframe may have changed,
but we STILL plan to create 100 DreamCatcher Libraries!
And here's an important step toward that goal - with this letter, I want to
announce that the $25,000 we received from Chase will be used to support our
work in Mindanao and Haiti. We have already selected our site in Mindanao
and I will ask our Latin America and Caribbean region to identify two
schools in Jacmel, Haiti where we can conduct Global PeaceMaker projects and
create DreamCatcher Libraries. Our Dominican Republic chapter members are
currently VERY busy helping with the Haitian emergency relief effort but, as
the relief work gradually transitions into rebuilding, we already developing
a specific action plan for Haiti. You can follow us on
twitter,
www.serviceforpeace.org for updates on our Haitian
relief work and the announcement of future volunteer opportunities in the
coming days.
So how are going to recruit all of the volunteers and raise all of the funds
for our 100 libraries? Well, one HUGE advancement that we made during the
Chase Challenge came in the area of social media. Our programs generally
involve young people and one very important way in which young people access
and receive information is through Facebook and other social media. Because
of the nature of the Chase Challenge, we have now established an extensive
network of Facebook fans and contacts with whom we can continue to
communicate. And these are not simply passive observers. Several people
stepped forward to energetically support the campaign and to urge others to
do so. It was very exciting to see the level of energy that was generated
during this past week.
Of course, it would have been wonderful if we had won the $1 million but
personally, I am not at all deflated. We have made some major progress
during these past few weeks and the more we take on challenges of all kinds,
the stronger we become as an organization. 2010 is till very young but we
have already accomplished a lot!
Finally, we want to offer our gratitude to the folks at JP Morgan Chase for
all the aforementioned opportunities that the Chase Community Giving
campaign as allowed Service For Peace.
