SFP Launches a GPM Scholarship Program in Honor of Irv Stolberg

We have just launched our first scholarship available to GPM applicants. The Irv Stolberg Fund was established in memory of an exemplary friend of Service For Peace - Irv Stolberg. The fund provides a $200 scholarship to one deserving participant per program in one of our Global PeaceMaker programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. The successful applicant will be one who best reflects the spirit of public service embodied by Irving Stolberg throughout his life. That individual will already have demonstrated an enthusiastic commitment to his or her community and the ability and creativity to make a significant, positive impact in society. Ask 10 Friends to Help Empower 900 Filipino Youth

We are developing an exciting project that will Empower 900 Filipino Youth of Christian and Muslim Backgrounds in Peace Building. Mindanao, the second largest city in the Philippines, has a 63% Christian majority and 32% Muslim population resulting in many violent conflicts due to misunderstanding. We are partnering with the regional department of education in a pilot program where 900 students of Christian and Muslim background will learn skills in peace building and conflict prevention through service-learning. To raise funds for this initiative we have joined Global Giving's (GG) Give More, Get More online campaign whereby funds raised between Nov 10 and Dec 1, 2009 will be matched between 30 and 50% depending on the total amount raised.

There are various ways that you can help us - from making a small contribution to becoming a team captain and recruiting ten friends to contribute. Click here to get involved now.

SFP Global Highlights for October

Ukraine
At the end of October, staff representatives of SFP in Ukraine participated in On-Line Volunteering Training, organized by United Nations Volunteers, Ukraine, hosted in the UN House in Kiev. UNV shared opportunities for Ukranian organizations to recruit volunteers through the Internet. In addition to benefiting from the workshop, our Ukranian team made new contacts and is scheduled to meet with UN Resident Coordinator of Ukraine - Mr. Olivier Adam.

Ivory Coast
UNV in Ivory Coast has pledged to support SFP in Ivory Coast in organizing a program for International Volunteer Day.

Our Community of Peace launched last summer in Blanfla is gaining popularity. Its members and the City Council of Boufle (the nearest town) have decided to raise funds and continue the co-created program.

A private university in Abidjan has invited SFP to introduce our Service Learning and Leadership program to its students next month.

The U.S. Ambassador has expressed an interest and intention to visit our SFP training center in ex-rebellion zone to explore the possibility of using it as a model for other similar training centers in the country that the U.S. Embassy will sponsor.

Honduras
This month SFP would like to recognize its chapter in Honduras for its commitment to social change despite political instability. Our team in Honduras is constantly looking for ways to support existing efforts toward peace and youth development. It was chosen to participate in a web technology workshop sponsored by the National Youth Institute, and the team is now is in the planning stages of sponsoring their own workshops to educate young people and raise money for the chapter. SFP in Honduras is also organizing its first of many monthly Peace Festivals in its Community of Peace, Altos de los Pinos. The festivals will engage young people and the entire community in art, music, and dance productions celebrating peace and love, and the community will raise money selling traditional food and crafts in order to hold another project to build the schoolroom for which the foundation was built less than a year ago.

Lastly, SFP would like to recognize one outstanding volunteer from the SFP team in Honduras. Dennis Estrada is a key member of the steering committee and has been volunteering for over three years with SFP. She has attended several GPM projects in the region. Rising above political turmoil in his country, Dennis was among 10 young people in the entire country to be chosen to participate in a special National Forum on Presidential Candidates, which engaged these young people in conversation with presidential candidates targeted at the social and political development of Honduras. Congratulations Dennis and congratulations to Service For Peace in Honduras!

In Service,

The SFP Team :)
