Dear SFP Friends:
Season’s Greetings! This year has seen significant accomplishments in the communities served by Service For Peace (SFP), and it would not have been possible without your generous support. During the past year, SFP has worked to increase the social impact of our programs in geopolitical hotspots around the globe. This has involved a commitment to expand our Communities of Peace (CP) program in every SFP chapter.
A Community of Peace is a community, in which the ethic of service prevails, uniting all of the various facets of the community around common development goals.
I am currently in the Philippines where today, the nation is horrified to learn of the election-related violence that has broken out on the island of Mindanao. Mindanao has a 63% Christian majority and 32% Muslim population and cultural misunderstandings and distrust have resulted in many violent conflicts in recent years. Despite the severe challenges, in 2010, SFP will continue to advance the Community of Peace program in the conflict ridden region of Mindanao in the Philippines.
During the past year, I have been investing in the development of a service learning peace curriculum to implement in Mindanao's schools, and I am very excited to return during this Thanksgiving period in the USA to introduce the curriculum to educators in Mindanao.
Our pilot program for the curriculum in Mindanao will promote inter-religious and inter-cultural understanding and nurture schoolchildren to become peacemakers. In addition to the peacemaker curriculum and trainings, the program involves the creation of a Dream Catcher Library. This library, situated in the region with the highest illiteracy rate in the Philippines, will benefit the community through projects such as a mobile library serving remote areas, and a student service club promoting the development of libraries in other cities.
Once again, thank you for all of your support during this past year and best wishes to you and your families for a joyous and meaningful holiday season.
